Review of The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005) by Raynormanbateman . — 13 Feb 2009
This is an absolutely stunning film in so many ways. It reminded me a lot of No country for old men where characters are flawed, they are discovering new things and going through one hell of an experience. I am amazed at how good some actors are turning out to be as directors, like Ben Affleck or Tommy Lee Jones here.
The movie is about two friends, one an American and the other a Mexican. He asks Pete to promise that he will take his body back to Mexico to his wife and kids if he dies. His friend dies and Pete investigates who killed his friend. This leads to a journey that two men will never forget.
The movie comes in different parts and we deal with a few scenarios that lead to the finale. I won't spoil it for anyone but I can definitely say that this is a very original, funny and beautiful movie. Barry Pepper is exceptional and so is Tommy Lee Jones.
The climax of the movie is one of the best I have seen in a while and it will definitely leave you thinking about it all for a while. Highly recommended.
