Review of The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005) by Dave L — 30 Sep 2011
Solid idea in this work about how to punish murderers (for those looking for alternatives to capital punishment). A sadistic border patrol agent (Barry Peppers) kills Melquiades Estrada who is Tommy Lee Jones' friend and ranch hand.
Tommy Lee Jones' kidnaps Barry Pepper, making him dig up Mr. Estrada's body and take it on a journey down into Mexico to give the dead man a proper burial in his hometown. This is a different sort of revenge story! The performances are outstanding.
The story does lag a bit in the middle and some of the scenes are odd. However, the end is incredibly powerful and the screenplay finds a good way to wrap up the theme.
