Review of The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) by Miles H — 01 Mar 2008
The one star the film gets is for the ultra-erotic chess scene. However, nothing quite that steamy ever happens between McQueen (who's unbelievably dull here) and Dunaway (who's unbelievably underdeveloped).
I never thought I'd find a boring Steve McQueen film, but this one does the deed. The crime scenes are uninteresting and uninspired. The romance is flacid and unconvincing. Even the heists are unimaginative and bland.
Heist seems like too high a word for them, really. Worse, Jewison overuses split screen techniques to the point of delirium. The theme song is alright, but a film this bad doesn't deserve a good theme, and thus, the song winds up feeling pretentious.
There seems to be a tendancy to always assume that the original version of a film is the best one. Here's the perfect rebuttal. The John McTiernan 1999 remake with Pierce Brosnan is far from perfect, but it blows this shipwreck out of the water.
