Review of The Third Man (1949) by Jonathan H — 29 May 2009
After watching citizen kane, all of my friends freaked out on me and told me that THIS is the movie that I would like if I liked Kane. maybe it was the hype, maybe it was the magnificence of Citizen Kane, but this movie just does not stack up to Kane, by a LONGshot. it is, however, a fucking fantastic movie.
The cinematography had my jaws dropped almost every other scene, and the setting of post-war vienna was both very inspiring and aesthetically interesting. this is particularly true in the chase scenes, which play with shadows on building walls that have become synonymous with suspense and mystery in hollywood flicks today.
the plot is great, easy to follow, and certainly had me guessing til the end (well, had me anxious to see how Orson Welles fits into all this, at least).
The dialogue was very fun and taught as well. Cotten held the entire show together amazingly well, and alida was a bombshell hottie.
Great movie! watch it twice. that soundtrack is especially great, given that this is about a murder mystery, but we keep getting fooled into thinking it's some sort of comical adventure because of the music.
