Review of The Third Man (1949) by Peter J — 10 Mar 2010
I think I saw this at a younger age and at that time thought it was good but not great. Give me a few years and a refreshing rediscovery of this tightly paced classic noir puts it at the top of my list of all time films.
Cotton is the perfect everyman to guide us through the shadows of post WWII Vienna, and although the early fast cuts still don't sit well with me there are enough shots where they hold and let the mood fill the beats beautifully.
The trim direction and pace kept me riveted throughout, and Welles rightfully steals the screen following his late appearance. Highly recommended!
