Review of The Third Man (1949) by Neum D — 13 Mar 2010
No matter how many times I was it, I'm always surprised and amazed. The shots are beautiful, the music is original for film noir, and the protagonist/antagonist relationship is a complicated one. Not a single person can guess the twist, and even if they do the moment is powerful. Perhaps the best line of all time is in The Third Man.
"Don't be so gloomy. After all it's not that awful. Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.".
