Review of The Third Man (1949) by Cita W — 04 Jul 2011
An expertly envisioned thriller. To use the cliche, 'ahead of it's time'. But was it really? Maybe 10 or 20 years ahead of 1949 but not much further than that! There have been better visualised film spectacles since but I suppose this set a precedent.
The character of Harry Lime is legendary and rightly so...a villian with an intriguing philosophy (not unlike Tony Soprano). The murky character portrayed of post-war Vienna is what makes the film rise above the ordinary, of which the story is quite that.
While the subtle highlight for me was the English Sergant Paine, who's quick, matter-of-fact British accent carries the tone of the dialogue into full-on entertainment territory. A classic but not a favourite.
