Review of The Thing from Another World (1951) by Bob L — 22 May 2010
John Carpenters remake is arguably better (I never thought I'd say that about a remake), as it retains the barest bones of this story and adds tons of tension and paranoia between the cast by having 'the Thing' mimic living organisms.
Here, it's just the scientists versus 'the Thing', and that just doesn't cut it for me. True, there are some inspired moments of direction, like with the almost naturalistic way you get the actors talking across each other, or the use of the burning actor as the only light source in another scene, (which is why I give an extra 1/2 star) but I found the movie motored through too fast.
Fine for most of it, but made the ending too much of an 'is that it?'.
