Review of The Thing (2011) by Tuomas R — 09 Jul 2012
It syncs up really well with the 1982 film and is entertainingly okish for the most part. Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton both good and the rest of the cast are forgettable (thank your lucky stars that none of them are particularly annoying) and I have to give the film some credit for at least attempting to do something different instead of a straight remake but christ on a bike the CGI creature is a fucking catastrophe!!! I can't even begin to imagine how they could have possibly have got it more wrong.
.. in the 1951 film it was a bit carrot man (limitations obviously due to special effects at the time, but you don't see it that much) and in the 1982 film it was a dirty, scuzzy, clumsy and most importantly a grotesquely creepy entity but in this film its clean, slick, agile, stuck on, obvious and ultimately not scary.
