Review of The Thing (2011) by Tim C — 06 Oct 2012
From the writer if the abysmal "A Nightmare on Elm Street" remake comes the even worse prequel to John Carpenter's classic "The Thing". Although billed as a prequel, it definitely feels more like a remake.
The stripped down, tension filled claustrophobia of the John Carpenter version (which itself was a remake) is what made it so memorable, along with Rob Botin's wildly gory practical special effects.
Both of these elements are forgotten and replaced with noisy action sequences containing little suspense and monsters that exist only in CGI. It's not that I was expecting a good film, but it's really disappointing the filmmakers so utterly missed what made the original so effective.
There are a few glimmers of decent ideas, like the new test for who's not human, but unfortunately the best part of the film is the end credits tie-in with the Carpenter film.
