Review of The Thing (2011) by Lee W — 14 Oct 2012
The Thing doesn't quite nail the claustrophobic paranoia of its John Carpenter forbear. Its slick CGI effects aren't as memorable as the legendary practical Rob Bottin creations from the 1982 film.
But it's still creditable as prequels/remakes go. The creatures are inventive and it nips along at a nice pace, and there's a nice mid-credits sequence at the end linking the whole thing to the superior Carpenter flick.
It's not without its faults, but in embracing connections to the original, rather than distancing itself a la a certain Prometheus, The Thing is a half decent stab at following up a stone cold classic.
