I enjoyed The Thing. They wrote the story to lead perfectly into the 80's movie. I always wanted to know the story behind how the Thing started it's invasion on those people before Kurt Russel shows up.
You must watch this movie followed by the 80's sequel entitled The Thing as well. Not a fan of the same name though.
