Review of The Thing (2011) by Paul D — 23 Feb 2013
I thought this movie was actually pretty solid. It's enjoyable and easy to watch. It is not even close to being as good as Carpenter's version, and the addition of females into the storyline eliminates the uncomfortable, hostile macho feeling of the previous film, but Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a real badass hero who looks awesome with a flamethrower.
The massive amount of computer generated effects makes the threat of the aliens feel less severe and more artificial, but they are still pretty good even if excessive. The puppets and animatronics of the original are so good that it was going to be hard to top it anyway.
Not an improvement on the Carpenter sci-fi/horror masterpiece, but a nice addition.
