Review of The Thing (2011) by Sean B — 20 Jun 2013
A surprisingly great addition to the 1982 classic. It hits all of the right notes, and expands on the first incident in a satisfying way. Fans of the original will recognize many of the settings, and the destruction/remains found in the Norwegian base in Carpenter's film.
I normally detest prequels, but this one adds to the original film in a very organic way and stays true to that film in both theme and content. The only downside is the heavy use of CGI, most of which was forced by the studio against the director's wishes at the last minute. And it's a shame, because this is a great movie and a proper extension of the universe. It would be nice to get a director's cut with the practical effects and some of the different scenes.
