Review of The Thing (2011) by Benjamin R — 13 Oct 2012
First of all, this is NOT a remake or reboot but a prequel, that's not a bad thing as it explains deeper of what happened before the original film but ends predictably as you'd expect for the originals epic opening.
Can't possibly compare to the film it's inspired by, but if you've not seen the 1982 version, you should find it reasonably harmless, albeit with an increasingly daft climax that was a tad predictable.
This may have been a pointless film to make...un-needed as it were, but there are good things in this movie: Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a great lead and her first for a long time and carries the film with ease, taking over the Kurt Russel role, the rest were good too, making it very tense in some scenes and some good but mild shocks.
The special effects were ok but the shock value seemed to have vanished thanks to the lame CGI, it was nor shocking or gory but did have some good ideas, also the film was a bit dark and when it tried to shock.
..it failed. Still a worthy prequel and not as bad as I'd expected it to be but I would stick to the original one. You'll enjoy this, if you haven't seen the original. Not bad though.
