Review of The Thing (1982) by Joe C — 04 Jan 2015
Antarctica can be a pretty foreboding place; The intense cold, isolation, long nights, and the parasitic, shape-shifting aliens that can take the form of whatever they infect can turn off anyone. Perhaps it was Carpenter's fusion of sci-fi and horror, or Rob Bottin's body-shock FX, or Kurt Russell, or the prediction of the AIDS epidemic in the alien virus plotline, but The Thing gets in your head and never budges.
With scenes of severed heads sprouting legs and walking around and dogs being transformed into sort of sick 10 foot tall transformer, there's no doubt the special effects team was having a ball with this one.
The feeling of isolation and paranoia might've made The Thing a horror movie in the 80's, but nowadays it's a macho, gory balls out good time.
