Review of The Thing (1982) by Justin A — 05 Sep 2015
John Carpenter's The Thing is an iconic cult film, a remake of an earlier horror flick, based on humanity's fear of an alien invasion. Originally receiving negative reviews and low box office, "The Thing" has rightfully begun to receive praise long after its release, being known as a land mark in cult horror.
The practical effects used in the film are some of the best in its day, and whilst they make not look "scary" anymore, they certainly hold up, and watching them is a joy, so much so you'll wish they were used more.
In a time where CGI is now rampant and over used, an older film like this is a refreshing and unique experience for any too young to have seen it when it was first released. Whilst it may not be Carpenter's best film, it is definitely well directed and shot, and even the acting is better than most movies of its kind, particularly Kurt Russell.
Overall, The Thing is a great film that should be viewed by anyone interested in the genre of sci fi horror, Carpenter fans, or just general movie fans alike.
