The first hour drags, and the film feels muddled and unfinished on the whole. But that doesn't mean that it isn't a good movie; quite the contrary - I thought The Thin Red Line demonstrates what Saving Private Ryan could have been with a little depth.
It was a pain to get through the first half, and the entire movie in general. But if you can find three hours and have some patience, it's a rewarding experience.
