Review of The Thin Red Line (1998) by Sean H — 28 Apr 2012
A really good war film, one of the best actually. The battle sequences were amazing, the cast is huge with many stars, the acting is superb (especially Nolte), and the cinematography is gorgeous. My only real complaint with the film is that the philosophical elements infused throughout the film aren't as easy to understand as they were in Malick's 2011 film, The Tree of Life.
The battle sequences and performances were brilliant, but I wasn't able to fully grasp the full picture, at least not in the first viewing. I also found it interesting that the film was released the same year as Saving Private Ryan.
This is a great film but unfortunately it was overshadowed by the brilliant Private Ryan. Nominated for 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, The Thin Red Line is a must-see!
