Review of The Thin Red Line (1998) by Jesse W — 15 May 2013
This viewers favorite war film to date. While the battle scenes may not have had the grittiness in the likes of Saving Private Ryan, the mental battle of the soldiers is expressed better than any other war film I have seen.
Saving Private Ryan may have had the revolutionary cinematography in terms of how the filmmakers shot the battle scenes which were the most realistic ever seen (and now often duplicated) but the moral and emotional depth to the characters were only slightly explored on the surface whereas the characters of The Thin Red Line have much more philosophical weight.
With any Malick film, it is visual poetry and asks a lot from the viewer. Each frame truly is worth a thousand words that you can pick apart with every view. The ensemble of cast members is extraordinary and the acting is very good itself.
On a technical level, its absolutely beautiful to watch and will haunt viewers with its approach and views towards each situation. The devastation of nature is akin to man himself. Masterpiece.
