Review of The Thin Red Line (1998) by Scotty C — 01 Dec 2013
Visually stunning. Perhaps one of the most beautifully filmed movies I've ever seen. Terrence Malick has a way of capturing the environments in which his films take place with such grace and nuance that it makes my jaw literally drop.
Even the battle scenes are beautiful, although Malick doesn't let you enjoy them; they are visceral and engaging but not triumphant, or 'fun', in the way a lot of war movies are (which could be part of why this film butts heads with some viewers).
You feel the weight of the loss of every life, regardless of what side they're on. I personally don't agree with the notion that most of the main characters are too similar. Or rather, I don't think it is unintentional or erroneous.
Like Full Metal Jacket, this movie shows the way that the military (quite deliberately) promotes collectivism by making soldiers shave and cut their hair the same way, dress the same way, speak in unison, etc.
But even so, I still say there are plenty of standouts among the cast.
