The Thin Red Line (1998) ? (at least a positive rating).
After 20 years of absence, director Terrence Malick returns with one of the most visionary war films ever made. The story (a remake of the 1964 film) involves tough battle of Guadalcanal and the conflicts among the men who face it. Rate this ??? if you want a unique war study (it's negated by following unrelated story paths), or ???? for a visual experience. However, it's unarguably striking, philosophical, and features several powerful performances from Jim Caviezel, Sean Penn, and especially Nick Nolte. If only it didn't meander so much!
