Review of The Thin Blue Line (1988) by Allen G — 21 Apr 2016
Literally, the exact moment that I finished watching this film I said to myself "I want to be a documentary filmmaker". That thought lasted about five minutes because, I'm quite lazy and I already have enough going on in my life but, still, those five minutes ignited a passion for documentaries that has stayed with me ever since (and I already loved them). 'The Thin Blue Line' is the pinnacle of documentary film. Before the Paradise Lost trilogy, before the work of Joshua Oppenheimer, before all of it- there was this.
It's the ultimate 'who done it' - like you've seen on the Crime channel a million times before (though this still came first). This is more than just a visual re-enactment though, it is a complete deconstruction and what lies beneath is chilling to the core. Morris delivered something truly remarkable here and it really gives breath to the phrase "you couldn't make it up".
A truly pioneering work- the 'In Cold Blood' of film.
