Review of The Thief of Bagdad (1940) by Robby R — 20 May 2011
Colorful and fantastical but not as capturing in my opinion as the 1924 silent version (no real relation in story but does contain elements). It definitely inspired much of what Disneyâ??s Aladdin became from an evil Jafar to a sultan who plays with toys to a thief named Abu.
It balances fantasy with part musical towards the beginning and part comedy. It showcases many Arabian myths like Djinn and flying carpets (and some rather weird old person from stones or something). It's fun but lacks the novelty and excitement that the 1924 one has.
