Review of The Thief of Bagdad (1940) by Elena . — 02 Aug 2007
This is too hi-tech for me. (I Know how that sounds) I prefer the silent one. I noticed an interesting trend in cinema: many silents, lacking in technology, relied on amorphous, nebulous images to convey a sense of the magical and the unknown, as well as a more faded, misty, hazy cinematography.
This created such a thick feeling of magic, that one could say that it touches the audience deeper in many ways than the wonders special effects later created. All the best scenes were plays of light, mist and shadow.
I still adore this new version though, in all its technicolour majesty.
