Review of The Thief of Bagdad (1924) by Mike M — 24 Jun 2007
On big, Griffith-influenced sets, you get big, declamatory acting. Fairbanks, mostly shirtless, misses no opportunity to show off his physique and athleticism - his miming of "rubbing a hungry stomach" looks like a gym exercise - although he ducks out of fighting a giant ape, which really would have been a match-up for the ages.
Though the film's scale and design can't help but impress, Raoul Walsh's direction is still just a bit more plodding than you'd like, with every other scene threatening to turn into a lavish parade of some kind.
