It's well-acted and has some great gory kills, but The Beginning is mostly scare-free, and the tension is very uneven. It is somewhat entertaining, and every scene with Leatherface himself is truly great.

The problem is that there isn't enough Leatherface in this movie ABOUT THE ORIGINS OF LEATHERFACE. Instead, we spend way too much time with the killer's slightly less interesting family and the much less interesting teenagers we pretend to care about, but without Leatherface himself.

Overall, this prequel is the victim of wasted potential and a poorly written story, making me even more hopeful that 2017's Leatherface does a better job than this film did.
