Review of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) by Allan C — 14 Jan 2013

Of the rash of 70s and 80s horror film remakes lately, this is my second favorite, right after the "Dawn of the Dead" remake. The first time I watched this film I was extremely skeptical, but ended up quite liking it.

It's loyal to the original, but also made changes that seemed to work. I'd actually say the weakest aspect of this film is Leatherface, who's pretty much reduced to being Jason or Michael Meyers in a new costume.

However, there's great special effects, nice photography (by the DP from the original film, no less), good atmosphere, decent suspense, and a good new climactic chase. The prequel that followed may actually be better, but this is a pretty solid bit of horror.
