Review of The Ten Commandments (1956) by Roy S — 07 Apr 2012
Anything worth doing is worth overdoing, and this sure was worth doing. The special effects and set design are still impressive as long as one remembers that every person is a real person, and every object is a real object (though perhaps a tiny one).
But it is really the acting and dialog that keeps me coming back every Easter/Passover. The casting is sometimes. . . unusual, but everyone is really swinging for the fences and a movie this big has room for big performances.
I'm sure most people find the screenplay hokey, but I find it not only amusing but also quite clever. So sure, the Russians had Sputnik; we had West Side Story, the '57 Chevy, Elvis, and the nearly four hour long Ten freakin' Commandments.
Thank you Cecil B. for helping make America so awesome!
