Review of The Ten (2007) by Bill B — 08 May 2009
This is a classic example of when the execution doesn't live up the concept. There's a lot of great actors here and the idea of crafting a slightly surreal/slightly screwball comedy that spoofs religion is a good one but this movie derails early on.
The problem is that each vignette is pretty much instantly forgettable. Perhaps if the humor were a little darker and a little less goofy this concept could have worked. I don't mind offensive humor but it's a fine line to walk.
Most of the time this movie just manages to be offensive without being funny, therefore dropping the ball...like the Scary Movie franchise. There are a couple bright spots though, including Liev Schreiber's sketch about cat scan machines and a bunch of naked men jamming out to Roberta Flack.
Going in you think this movie is going to make a point or statement and it just never does.
