Don't you just love it when comedies aren't nearly as funny as they think they are? Well then you're going to love "The Ten". I wish that I could share your enthusiasm.
How can you possibly screw up a movie with a cast that includes Liev Schrieber, Bobby Cannavale, Paul Rudd, Jason Sudekeis, Oliver Platt and Rob Corddry? You give them unfunny things to say and do for 90 minutes, and then watch as the hilarity (or lack thereof) ensues.
"The Ten" is a collection of ten short skits that involve people blatantly disobeying the Ten Commandments. I won't go through each ten of them (mainly because I don't like the majority of them) but I will mention the best and worst sketches.
- Two black kids (who happen to have a white mother) one day ask who there father is. The mother says that the boys' father is...well, I won't give it away here. Just know that Oliver Platt, who makes an appearance in the skit, is downright hilarious.
- Liev Schrieber is hilarious as a man who covets the fact that his neighbor has recently purchased a CAT scan machine. He's so jealous that he actually buys one himself, which leads his neighbor to buy another one. And another one. And another one. It's amazing that one of the film's more dramatic stars actually delivers the funniest performance in a normally unfunny film.
The others fall flat. They're not just unfunny, they're actually almost painful to listen to sometimes. "The Ten" is currently on DVD and is actually streaming for free on Hulu, but I recommend that you SKIP "The Ten" and watch its two funny skits on YouTube.
