Review of The Tattooist (2007) by Julianne B — 23 Jun 2008
The New Zealand agenda of trying to add a "Pacific" flavour to established, mostly American-dictated, genres is an interesting notion, but a film like this really shows how much of that energy is better spent in producing a good film rather than a culturally sensitive one.
The film's main flaw is that it looks and plays like a television movie-of-the-week with a ho-hum script, a serving of poor acting, grotesque cultural generalizations and a whole fat pile of "this-is-not-scary".
Playing out like a feature-length version of a BAD "X-Files" episode, this film has nothing to say and very little understanding of how to say it. The poster is the best thing about the whole movie.
Once again, New Zealand film shoots itself in the foot through lack of appreciation for its own abilities.
