Review of The Tattooist (2007) by James S — 14 Jan 2010
You feel the horror world could have been clutching at straws here - a demonic tattooist's tool.
The set up is scrappy at best - Jason Behr joins the US teen drama stars who now appear in scary films alumni as a spiritual tattoo artist who nicks a samoan tattoo tool which then wreaks bloody havoc on anyone he uses it upon. Naturally, there are supernatural forces at play here and a case of abandonment issues and foul murder.
Some how though The Tattooist manages to make itself an enjoyable movie. Perhaps because of it's inventive yet barmy premise, it lends itself to some outlandish death sequences - the one in which the tattoo ink consumes a guy in a swimming pool at his birthday party is particularly cool, and for a direct to dvd release the gore effects are quite impressive.
Jason Behr carries his role nicely. He would never have the charisma to headline a Hollywood blockbuster but at this kind of low brow horror he's more than satisfactory. The film pulls one or two surprises even if by the end it's a little predictable and has an awful closing scene.
The Tattooist is an adequately made and enjoyably diverting horror.
