Review of The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) by Greg B — 29 Nov 2010
The Talented Mr. Ripley revolves around the hauntingly sociopathic character, Tom Ripley (Damon), who succeeds in both intriguing and disturbing the viewer by traveling to Italy and assuming the identity of a man he's supposed to bring back to America.
The consequences of his actions leave you speechless and enthralled. With some stunning locations, intelligent directing - the scene where Tom Ripley, dressed in a white gown, slowly approaches a terrified and suspicious Margie (Paltrow) is absolutely chilling - a unique and terrifying story, and sleek editing, The Talented Mr.
Ripley deserves recognition as a great thriller. Its themes of 'identity' and 'being an outsider' are well explored, the mood is utterly dark, yet satisfyingly so, and the level of deceit and drama is high enough to compete with any Shakespearian play.
Great entertainment.
