Review of The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) by Andy T — 11 Jun 2012

This film blew me away in so many different ways that it's hard to explain. Perhaps it's because Matt Damon's character is disturbingly like me in several ways that I became so involved and invested in his character and engrossed in the storyline.

The plot is genius - one quick turn after another and it was genuinely thrilling in so many parts. How often is it that a film can eventually make you root for the guy you really shouldn't be supporting and hoping that all ends well for him? It's a testament to the impeccable acting and the quality of the source novel that this is as good as it is.

Not only is this thoroughly enjoyable on every level, but there is a bonus! Yes a bonus I tell you - if you like jazz you're in for a sublime treat: Matt Damon and Jude Law performing My Funny Valentine, Damon on vocals and Law on sax - simply divine is what that is.

One thing which, while perhaps infuriating for the characters, made me very happy was the fact that there were no loose ends when it all finished. Every avenue was explored and no random things were left hanging. Such good storytelling.
