Review of The Tale of Despereaux (2008) by Chris P — 24 Jul 2009
An animated, yet somewhat modern fairy tale that will warm your heart and truly make you see that different can be beautiful, and even heroic. It's amazing that we 'hear' the story first, but we don't even meet the main character until the middle part of the film.
But what makes this film truly remarkable is that all the worlds in the Kingdom of Dor - the human world, the mouse world, and the rat world - and all the major characters: Despereaux, the Princess, Roscuro, and the farm girl - all their stories, we are able to follow at some point, and eventually they all intertwine together.
Each has its share of highs and lows, and you can actually sympathize with the characters and understand how they are feeling. If you get the DVD, I highly recommend seeing "The Tale of The Tale of Despereaux", basically the back story of how they created the movie - very cool.
And not only does the story make the movie great, but the all-star cast is a nice touch. "The Tale of Despereaux" is a film for those with "courage, honor, and loyalty" times ten! It's a true winner!
