Review of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) by Johnny S — 12 Jun 2009
The original film was made back in the 1970s and was one of those films that the city of New York seemed to be one of the supporting characters in. The premise is that a gang of criminals (led by the cooly efficient Robert Shaw) highjack a subway car and demand a million dollar ransom from the city of New York.
Walter Mathau plays a NY transit cop who ends up trying to stop Shaw and his thugs. Look for a very young Jerry Stiller playing a uniformed transit cop (his roles on SEINFELD and THE KING OF QUEENS were still off in the future).
The film was not a huge success but Quentin Tarintino was obviously a fan; the gang in the film use colour-oriented codenames (ala "Mr. Pink") just like the gang in RESERVOIR DOGS.
