Review of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) by Doug R — 15 Jun 2009
The excellence of the original "Pelham" is in its details. There's not a single element of this meticulous film that's misplaced. And while it's certainly not groundbreaking in its storytelling, dialogue, or action scenes, this film does feel authentic.
Both Shaw and Matthau underplay their roles as villain and cop, which helps keep the focus on the tight plot. Also of huge note is director Joe Sargent's use of movement in the background, with the main characters usually framed in the foreground.
This helps make so much of "Pelham" seem real.
