The recent remake is a dead fish compared to this boistrous, funny, fast-paced film. The dialogue is more natural, the plot more comprehensive, and above all everything is so much more New York, with plenty of grouchy arguments and dry wit. Every character is bursting with personality, including most of the unnamed hostages on the train for instance-- arguing, screaming, crying, discussing the finer points of subway braking systems, asking how much the ransom was, meditating loudly, one even sleeping through the whole thing-- while those in the new movie just sat around looking depressed (apart from the two who had to pee).

"Why don't you just grab a goddamn airplane like everybody else??".

"Cause we're afraid of flyin!".

"I just figured out how they're gonna get away.".

"I'm listening.".

"They're gonna fly the train to Cuba!".

"...You're a sick man, Rico.".
