Review of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) by Bob L — 04 Aug 2009
As the Scott version has just come out, I thought I'd sit through the original again. Shaw is just so stunningly good as a nasty control freak. Cold eyes and calm tone, how anyone could think to fill those boots I dunno.
Matthau is an unusual choice, but is the perfect foil for Shaw and like the whole movie (even though locations are not that varied) oozes 'New York'. Gripping, well written and brilliantly acted grit.
Looking at this, I'm amazed the Subway system doesn't look any different after 30 ish years! Just read there was a remake made in '98 too. That must have been good as noones heard of it- so beware Tony Scott, getting this right may not be as easy as it looks!
