Review of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) by Tom H — 25 Nov 2010
Essential '70s popcorn thrills. This minor classic features the unlikely duo of Walter Matthau as a jaded NYPD Transit cop, and Robert Shaw as an ex-mercenary who leads a group of armed, color-coded gunmen in a desperate hostage situation on a subway car to negotiate for ransom within one hour.
Featuring a supporting cast of New Yorkers including Martin Balsam, Jerry Stiller, Hector Elizondo, and Tony Roberts, this film moves from humorous to tense and back again with an agility that only the best of their kind are capable of.
Top-notch the whole way down.
