Review of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) by Kevin R — 13 Jun 2010
Who's going to steal a subway train?
A group of terrorists hijack a train in New York City and demand a ransom of $1,000,000. The terrorist's contact at the police force is Lt. Zachary Garber. Garber does a good job of using the information he obtains from the terrorists to manipulate the situation; however, when it becomes time to pay the terrorists, Garber becomes an intricate part of delivering the cash and bringing the situation to its climax.
"What do you want?".
"I'm taking your train.".
"You're taking my train?".
Joseph Sargent, director of The Wall, The Incident, Day One, Never Forget, Tomorrow's Child, White Lightening, Sunshine, The Man, Immortal (1969), and Street-Fighter (1959), delivers The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. The storyline for this picture is wonderful and well delivered. The terrorists and police force were both presented well and the acting was fantastic. The cast includes Walter Mathau, Hector Elizondo, Jerry Stiller, Dick O'Neill, and Doris Roberts.
"We had a bomb scare in the Bronx yesterday, but it turned out to be a cantaloupe.".
When I saw the recent remake of this picture was airing on cable, I had to find this picture based on its wonderful reviews on RT. This movie was outstanding and I'm going to have a hard time believing the remake can be anywhere close to as good as this picture. The script for this movie was marvelous and Walter Mathau delivers a triumphant performance that is emphasized in the final scene. This is a must see movie and worth having in your collection. It is a shame that some of these classics are not well known until the remake is made.
"I'll shoot your pee-pee off.".
Grade: A+.
