Review of The Tailor of Panama (2001) by Frances H — 06 May 2017
160428: *** Plot reveal ***. I was very uncertain how I felt about this film upon its conclusion. As a result, I watched the extra features and reviewed Wikipedia. I have always had problems with stories that are not very direct in their plot, convoluted, or end in ways contrary to my values.
The Tailor of Panama presented me with both of these challenges. My post film research indicated I was correct in my observations and those facts made it hard for me to enjoy this film. To imagine so much could occur the result of lies from so few people is hard to believe.
But, perhaps that is what makes this film enjoyable in itself. It seems it was my own self-doubts that interfered with my viewing. If you don't have these self-doubts perhaps you'll love this film? To the production's credit, I thoroughly loved Geoffrey Rush's portrayal of Harry Pendel, the Tailor of Panama.
Rush's acting and character were excellent while I detested Pierce Brosnan's MI6 agent Andy Osnard. I have never really been a fan of Brosnan so not certain if it was the character or the actor.
Regardless, this film is worth watching for Rush's work alone and, upon a lot of reflection, I will likely watch it again at least a second time.
