Review of The Swimmer (1968) by David S — 19 May 2010
Odd character drama adapted from the John Cheever short story features Burt Lancaster in possibly his greatest role. Despite a number of inspired moments and great character performances that create an absurd portrait of upper-class suburbia (all set to Marvin Hamlisch's overly-lush score, which adds an interesting atmosphere), the episodic plot is unevenly paced, and it struggles to keep the set-up compelling with themes that are fairly heavy-handed.
Flawed, but an interesting piece of work.
