Review of The Sweet Hereafter (1997) by Martin M — 15 Jul 2007
On the surface this is a film about a small rural town trying to live through a terrible tragedy. In the aftermath of what has happened we begin to see that things are not quite what they seemed to be, and much like a David Lynch film, where darkness always seems to exist underneath an outwardly benign surface, we see that the people of this town are not quite who they appeared to be.
An outstanding movie from Canadian director Atom Egoyan. Sarah Polley and Bruce Greenwood in particular give standout performances.
