Review of The Sweet Hereafter (1997) by Alexander Z — 28 Aug 2012
Honestly, for me the metaphors are too forceful to be profound to me. Perhaps it's because of how the actors delivered their lines. Ian Holm is the best performance here as the manipulative, guilt-ridden father, with quite a lot of levels to his character, but I don't think he carried the film as well as he could have.
This is mostly due to the weaker acting surrounding him. My other problem is while the themes of regret and loss are intertwined very well here, much of the plot feels shoehorned in rather than merged properly, which made for a watching experience where I was constantly getting distracted, waiting to be absorbed.
