Review of The Swan Princess (1994) by Jessica G — 12 Nov 2007

This is a very charming movie with a lot of funny moments in it, great cast of voices and beautiful animation.

I must however take away a star from this movie, and that is because of Prince Derek, I cannot believe how stupid he was.

The movie goes that the king and a queen of another land have their children late in life, and conveniently, they decide that since Derek and Odette are close in age, they could get married and unite the kingdoms... or whatever.

Anyway, Derek and Odette hate each other, they are forced to spend time with each other and they only fight.

But once they grow up, Derek and Odette madly fall in love with each other...

Odette apparently see something nice in Derek that I don't, maybe she likes the fact that he is so athletic.

But Derek... oh my god, this movie wouldn't excist if he had a brain!

She asks him why he loves her, he says "Because you are beautiful!".

She asks "Isn't there something else?".

His answer?

"Should there be something else?".

OMG, I can't believe how stupid he was!

"I only love ya for your looks, b---tch".

Yeah, she gets pissed off and dosen't want to talk to him again, and I completely understand her.

But this movie seems to think that Derek is the only prince in the whole world and Odette dosen't deserve better. Derek decides because he is so stupid and can't tell her why he loves her besides her look, he is going to prove it to her! But then comes bad guy and kidnaps Odette, kils her father and curses her, making her turn into a swan when the moon dosen't shine.

People in the kindom thinks she is dead, so I guess a year or years pass.

But Derek of course believes she is alive somewhere and practices to kill bad guy, who the kings last words was "it is not what it seems". By reading a book Derek gets the perfect idea that "it's not what it seems" of course means that the bad guy is a rat that transforms into a nasty dragon... hello????

Anyway, Derek firmly believes this and one day goes out to kill this beast. Guess what?

Odette decides she's going to find Derek, so she sets on a journey to.

And THEN the most brilliant thing of all...

Derek believes that Swan-Odette is the monster so he decides to kill her!

OMFG!!!! ARRGH!!! PUKE!!!! SCREAM!!!!

WHY?????????

Thankfully for Odette, Derek is so stupid, that when she flies into the sunlight, his eyes gets blinded and he can't shoot her.

So yeah, if Derek would be smarter, this movie would get a higher rating.
