Review of The Sure Thing (1985) by Gary G — 30 Aug 2009
(4 stars out of 5) John Cusak has made a career for himself playing the everyman/underdog and he shines here in his first leading role (pre-Better Off Dead/One Crazy Summer) opposite Daphne Zuniga as a pair college kids who can't stand each other.
He's a goofy beer and cheese balls for breakfast kind of guy and she has her life planned through her retirement in Vermont with a basset hound and a lawyer husband by her side in their restored farmhouse.
As fate would have it they end up trapped on the same cross-country journey/carpool together. She's going to meet her perfect-boyfriend-on-paper and he (in the throws of a dry-spell) is going to meet up with a "sure thing" fixed up by his best friend from High School.
Sparks fly as you would expect they would and opposites attract as they fall in love amid the misadventures of their cross-country nightmare. Another 80's gem!
