Gothika - :rotten: 2/10.
A very bad movie- acting from Halle Berry was suprisingly awful, the script was almost B-grade, and every idea in the film seemed borrowed from other horror movies.
There was no real suspense, every "twist" in the plot was predictable, and the whole tone of the film seemed uncomfortable, as though no-one working on Gothika actually wanted to.
A waste of Halle Berry's talents, and of viewers time.
There's Something About Mary - :fresh: 8/10.
What isn't there to like in this movie? There is a joke for everyone, and though some may be politically incorrect, the film coaxes you into enjoying yourself.
Every actor is cast perfectly, especially Cameron Diaz, who really brings There's Something About Mary to life, though Chris Elliot is a real highlight.
Every scene has some humour in it, and it's the little jokes that often shadow the more "well-known" incidents. The greatest thing about this film, though, is the script. Witty and often quite smart, it brings the comedy up a notch.
If you liked this movie, I would definitely reccommend the special edition DVD, which has 7 hours of extras! It corrupted me!
The Sum Of Us - :fresh: 6/10.
One of Russel Crowe's first films, and a great Austrlian movie. It blends comedy and drama well, but it's roots as a play are too obvious. The script is amazing, bringing the viewers closer to the father-son bond that Crowe and Jack Thompson share.
There are moments of great cinematography, but these are few. The highlights of the movie are the superb black and white flashback scenes, and Crowe's performance, which slowly becomes better and better.
Not as much a "gay" movie as it is a family movie, The Sum Of Us is an extraordinary character study of father and son.
Secret Window - :fresh: 6/10.
This was a big let down, but not a bad film. Johnny Depp, though not one of his best performances, is incredible in this role. Maria Bello was perhaps miscast here, as she doesn't seem to have the emotional range for her character.
Some great cinematography and a fairly good script, but Secret Window suffers from lack of suspense and confusing beginning scenes.
~m~.
