Review of The Sugarland Express (1974) by Blake E — 31 Dec 2007
This movie confounded my expectations every step of the way. Spielberg's first theatrical feature is a masterpiece of tone, balancing comedy, drama, action and suspense with a deft touch. It has so many funny moments intermixed with the suspense (and perhaps inevitability) of the scenario that I was constantly alert and enthralled.
On top of all of this, a gorgeous piece of cinematography from Vilmos Zsigmond and a memorable minimalist score from John Williams. They don't make them like this anymore.
